Cameroon plans to install weighbridges maintenance charges, as the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) indicated in one of her press releases.
According to the company, the charge will be about 26 USD per m3 of timber transported via Cameroonian roads. It will be paid to the intergovernmental company operating the weighbridges.
Due to their heavy loads, logging trucks are considered the main infrastructural destroyers of roads in Cameroon. The government has therefore decided to place a weight limit on the volume of timber these trucks can transport as a conservative method geared towards road preservation. Thus the implementation of weighbridges has been installed to keep this in check.
Another concern may however be evoked with regards to transport cargo trucks if they are exempt from this new tax levy, knowing they also weigh huge tons which consequentially do not leave our roads indifferent.
Numerous taxes are already evoked on transport delays, if a truck doesn’t cross in time or stations longer than is due at the port, the truck gets hoofed. Consequentially, charges and taxes increase and possible cargo damage may be incurred depending on the type of good in transit.
These and more are some of the difficulties faced within the transport sector which need to be revisited by government authorities. Better policies and measures should be put in place to ease the situation primarily for business companies.
Considerations should not only be limited to infrastructural road precautions pertaining to timber trucks, but all other transport difficulties which form a chain process moving from weight, road degradation, stationing or parking allotment and G.P.S. installation at customs level which make the entire process hectic. Solutions should be tabled with regards to all these problems by the Cameroonian government to further boost international trade.
